Archtober 2026: New York's Architecture and Design Month begins with the theme "In Our Hands".

As every October, a month of discussions about architecture begins in the streets, museums, and lesser-known corners of New York City. Last year, Well Urban Things shared Archtober with you; the city's annual commitment to opening its doors so widely to architecture has become a tradition we continue to follow. The 16th edition of Archtober takes place from October 1-31, 2026, with hundreds of events spread across five boroughs of the city.

"In Our Hands": This Year's Theme

This year's festival theme, "In Our Hands," for the fourth time, guides a large part of the program. The theme proposes reconnecting with community and optimism in the face of climate change, rapidly evolving technologies, and polarizing politics; it highlights a collective desire for craftsmanship, sensory and inclusive design, and resilient structures. Within this framework, the festival groups all its events under five main headings: Nature, Media, Culture, History, and Education. Each offers a different perspective on the responsibility architects and designers undertake in shaping the city.

An Architectural Conversation at a Metro Station

One of this year's most notable innovations is the festival's move to a subway station for the first time. Archtober, in collaboration with the art duo Data Vandals – artist Jen Ray and data visualization specialist Jason Forrest – is reviving a long-abandoned newsstand on the Line 6 platform at the intersection of 51st Street and Lexington. Inside, the newsstand hosts rotating surveys, exhibitions, and live events, while a 24-hour mural on the exterior offers insights into the city's history, transforming a platform frequented by 52,000 people daily into an unexpected hub for architectural conversation.

A Program Spanning from Pumpkins to the Wild

The month-long program, created with contributions from over a hundred partner institutions, spans a much wider range than a classic architecture tour. "Building of the Day" tours, guided by a different architect each day, open up the city's current projects, from OMA's New Museum expansion to Studio Gang's Shirley Chisholm Recreation Centre. On October 28th, the Pumpkitecture pumpkin carving competition for architecture firms will once again convene at the Center for Architecture; there are also programs that extend beyond the city, from the Steven Myron Holl Foundation's forest campus in Rhinebeck to talks at the Glass House. In short, Archtober is not just about touring buildings; it offers the opportunity to experience architecture sometimes through a pumpkin, sometimes through a subway wall, and sometimes through a forest walk.

Following such a festival every year reminds us that architecture is not just a matter for experts, but for everyone living in a city. Being able to dedicate an entire month to architecture and design is actually an indicator of how much a city values its own memory, future, and daily life. The fact that so many different actors, from public institutions to consulates, universities to small NGOs, can come together in the same month shows that embracing architecture is a collective effort. We would very much like to see a similar architecture and design month in Türkiye, and for our cities to experience such broad-based ownership.
