Can a Music Festival Change the Identity of a City? Sunny Hill Festival and the Transformation of Pristina

Festivals are no longer just events for listening to music. In many cities around the world, festivals, conceived in conjunction with temporary architecture, public space design, cultural production, and tourism strategies, are transforming into powerful tools that change the international perception of cities.

In America, Coachella's transformation of Indio into a global destination is one of the best-known examples. A similar story is unfolding in the Balkans in recent years. The Sunny Hill Festival , held in Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, goes beyond being just a few days of music events, playing a significant role in the city's cultural and economic transformation.

This year, the festival, taking place from July 31 to August 2, 2026, will host artists such as Katy Perry, Martin Garrix, and Lewis Capaldi, as well as Adam Port, Rampa, Carlita, PAWSA, Seth Troxler, and many other international artists in Pristina. Bringing together approximately 100,000 visitors and participants from nearly 60 countries over three days, the festival has become one of the most significant cultural events in the Balkans.

More Than Music

Sunny Hill Festival was founded in 2018 by Dukagjin “Dugi” Lipa, and its international promotion is handled by three-time Grammy Award winner Dua Lipa . Having hosted artists such as Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Calvin Harris, Shawn Mendes, Stormzy, Burna Boy, Peggy Gou, Black Coffee, and Anyma in previous years, the festival today stands out not only for its lineup of artists but also for the unique urban experience it creates.

The following words from the festival's founder, Dukagjin Lipa, essentially summarize Sunny Hill's vision:

“Sunny Hill has never been just about music. Every summer, we bring the world to Kosovo for a few days.”

This approach transforms the festival from a simple concert event into a city-wide cultural project.

A Temporary City for Pristina

During the festival days, Pristina not only welcomes visitors but also undergoes a transformation. Public spaces are used more intensively, people from different countries meet in the same places, and the city temporarily transforms into an international cultural center.

This transformation is not limited to the festival stages alone. Accommodation, food and beverage, transportation, and local businesses are also becoming an important part of this dynamism. According to data from the Kosovo Hotels and Tourism Chamber, the 2025 edition of the Sunny Hill Festival generated approximately €22 million in direct economic impact. The festival was also awarded the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce Economic Impact Award for this contribution.
