Macchiato: A Pocket Park Inspired by the Coffee Ritual

Designed by OUT Architecture as part of the London Festival of Architecture 2026 , Macchiato transforms a neglected corner of Petticoat Lane in Aldgate into a small public space open to casual encounters. Developed for Aldgate Connect BID , the project brings the ritual of drinking coffee into a public space, creating a new meeting point where people can take short breaks, chat, and come together.

The pavilion's name comes from the Italian word macchiato , meaning "to leave a mark" or "stain ." The design is based on the imprint of a coffee cup left on a table. This everyday and familiar detail transforms into a circular seating element in a public space, creating a shared area where people can gather.

The choice of materials also supports this narrative. Stainless steel evokes coffee brewing equipment, while the cork surfaces allude to the agricultural origins and natural texture of coffee. Thus, the project establishes a holistic design language that references coffee culture not only formally but also through the materials used.

Macchiato also establishes a strong connection with its context. The fact that Petticoat Lane has been a center of commerce and cultural interaction for many years makes the project's idea of social gathering even more meaningful. The ethical trade and community-oriented approach of the nearby Colombian Coffee Company is also one of the important elements that nourished the conceptual background of the installation.

Despite its small scale, Macchiato demonstrates that public space can be transformed without major interventions. This pocket park, centered around a coffee break, offers a simple yet powerful suggestion on how everyday rituals can enrich urban life.
