A Contemporary Interpretation of Riga's Architectural Language: The Summer Pavilion

Designed by Latvian design studio Sampling , this temporary summer pavilion offers a contemporary interpretation of Riga's historic architecture. Commissioned by the Riga Municipality in 2024, the structure is conceived as a temporary installation intended for public use during the summer months.

At first glance, the pavilion's form resembles a tower. However, instead of referencing a specific structure in Riga's Old Town, the building abstractly reinterprets the tower typology that holds a significant place in the city's medieval skyline. This approach transforms the pavilion from a direct historical replica into a contemporary reading of Riga's architectural memory.
The designers describe the structure as a collage bringing together references from different periods and architectural characteristics of Riga. In this respect, the pavilion unites the city's eclectic nature and layered identity within a single architectural gesture.
Conceived as a romantic city park pavilion, the structure also aims to be a part of everyday life. It serves as a stopping point for sitting, chatting, taking a break, and observing the surrounding activity. Thus, it functions not only as a visual landmark but also as a small public space integrated into urban life.
Despite being temporary, the pavilion, which lends a strong character to its location, stands out as a successful example of transforming historical references into a contemporary architectural language.
