Kazan (火山の茶屋): A Pavilion Inspired by a Japanese Tea House in a Volcanic Landscape

Kazan (火山の茶屋) is a small-scale pavilion realized as part of Horizon Sancy 2025, held in the Massif du Sancy region of France. Drawing inspiration from both the Japanese tea house tradition and the region's volcanic landscape, the project establishes a poetic relationship between nature, ritual, and place.

The pavilion's starting point is volcanoes, symbols of both destruction and creation. The design connects the union of fire and water in the tea-making ritual with Sancy's volcanic past. Just as volcanoes shape the earth, the tea ceremony creates a transformative experience through the coming together of fire and water.

In Japan, a geography shaped by active volcanoes and earthquakes, respect for nature is a vital part of architectural and cultural production. Kazan combines this approach with Massif du Sancy, one of France's oldest volcanic regions, creating an unexpected link between two different geographies.

The pavilion is located on the GR30 hiking route, overlooking the Massif du Sancy and Lac de la Landie. This makes it not only a stopover for visitors but also an observation point for experiencing the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Conceived as both a tea house and an observation point, the structure features forms representing the formation of the earth, spring waters, hills shaped over time, and new life emerging from chaos. Built entirely of French wood, the pavilion invites visitors not only to admire the view but also to contemplate the transformative processes of nature.

Despite its small scale, Kazan stands out as a powerful example demonstrating the potential of architecture to go beyond simply producing a building; it can tell a story and bring together different cultural layers.
