Curly Cube: A Modular Public Installation for Play and Interaction

Public spaces often remain merely transit areas or places used for short periods. Curly Cube is a modular installation that reverses this, making the user an active part of the space.

Located in a park on the banks of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, the project redefines public space not only visually but also through experience.
Fluid form, lightweight structure
Curly Cube's form consists of a seamless and fluid surface. The design is inspired by the Gyroid minimal surface , a mathematical surface . This approach provides both visual continuity and material efficiency.
The structure consists of membrane surfaces stretched over lightweight frames measuring 2 meters by 2 meters. This system offers a structure that is both lightweight and easy to install.
Shadow during the day, light at night.
During the day, Curly Cube creates shaded and relaxing areas for users. However, the project undergoes its real transformation at night.
Strategically placed lights reflect off the silver-colored membrane surfaces, transforming the structure into a shimmering light sculpture. The colors constantly change depending on the viewing angle, creating a dynamic atmosphere that draws the user in.

Play, exploration, and interaction.
The Curly Cube's greatest strength is that it's not just an object to be watched. Its modular membrane units can be used in various ways: as a seating element, a divider, or even a jumping surface.
This flexibility invites the user to explore and reimagine the space. Play, interaction, and spontaneous use form the core character of the project.
A flexible and scalable system.
Thanks to its modular structure, Curly Cube can easily adapt to different spaces. Units can be stacked on top of each other, rearranged, or moved to different areas.
This feature transforms the project from a mere singular installation into an urban design tool adaptable to different scenarios.
Revitalizing public space
Curly Cube doesn't just aesthetically transform the space it occupies; it also changes the relationship users have with the space. By creating an environment open to exploration, gathering, and interaction, it makes the riverside public space more vibrant and inviting.
