Public Installations That Transform Ascrea's Memory into Space

Route of the Loci , implemented in the village of Ascrea in the Lazio region of Italy , treats public space not only as a physical environment but also as a carrier of collective memory. Designed by Eterotopia Altri Luoghi , the project reconnects visitors with local stories, traditions, and daily life practices through architectural interventions placed in the village streets.

The project's starting point is the Method of Loci , a memory technique where people create a mental route by associating information they want to remember with specific locations. Route of the Loci takes this idea and translates it into a real-world setting, transforming Ascrea's memory into a walking route that stretches throughout the village.

Working alongside villagers, local associations, and producers throughout the design process, the team developed public installations that make Ascrea's oral culture, legends, neighborhood names, and daily rituals visible. Thus, the project not only offers an experience for visitors but also facilitates a reconnection between the villagers and their own identity.

Four Stops That Tell the Story of the Village

There are four main installations along the walking route, each representing a different aspect of the village.

Wayfarer's Aedicule reinterprets the village bus stop, transforming the wait into an experience. Resembling a small temple, the structure, with its seating area and map, invites visitors to discover the unseen stories of Ascrea.

The Ascrea Parliament redefines the square where villagers have met and chatted for years. Eight movable seating elements represent the village's eight neighborhoods, and during holidays, the area is completed with neighborhood flags, transforming it into a vibrant public space.

The Herbal Garden is a tranquil retreat focused on experiencing local flora. With aromatic plants, arches framing the landscape, and seating areas, it invites visitors to slow down and experience the surroundings through different senses.

The Banners and Quarters located throughout the village make visible the neighborhood names of Ascrea, which have been passed down orally throughout history. Thus, place names serve not only for navigation but also for keeping the collective memory alive.

Transforming Public Space into a Memory Tool

Route of the Loci demonstrates that public design is not simply about creating new buildings. The project transforms everyday urban furniture such as bus stops, squares, gardens, and directional elements into narrative tools that make local memory visible.

While wandering through the narrow streets of Ascrea, visitors are not simply following a route, but also discovering the invisible connections established with the village's past, its people, and its daily life. In this respect, Route of the Loci offers an impressive example of how the relationship it establishes between architecture and storytelling reminds us of the cultural value of public space.
